2024 MISSOURI BUILDING BLOCKS NOMINEES:
1,000 BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN
Studies show that children who are read to on a regular basis have increased attention spans, more developed listening and language skills and a much larger vocabulary when they enter school. Sharing stories is a great way to develop important pre-reading skills, and it helps children to learn about the world around them. Sharing stories and books with your child teaches them a love of reading from a very young age because they associate reading with affection and encouragement not to mention the wonderful opportunity for bonding. Plus, reading stories together is just fun!
1,000 books can sound overwhelming, so here is a chart to help you set goals and see that it is very possible to reach your goals.
CHILD'S AGE AT START OF PROGRAM / NUMBER OF BOOKS PER WEEK:
Birth........................4
1 Year Old..............5
2 Years Old.............7
3 Years Old...........10
4 Years Old...........20
Any child from birth until he/she enters kindergarten can participate in the program. The program is self-paced and will depend on how often you read together. Any book read to the child counts and if they have a favorite that you read over and over you count it each time it is read. Each 100 books will be rewarded by the library. Just bring in your child’s reading log and it will be documented. Once they have completed 1,000 books they will be invited to attend a party celebrating their wonderful accomplishment!
